Infrared

A collection of film and digital infrared color and black and white photographs created with various cameras over a course of thirty years. Some images are created with a SLR camera using Kodak High-Speed Infrared film and others were photographed using a DSLR using a Hoya R72 which blocks all visible light up to 720nm. Both film and digital processes require a tripod and relatively long exposures. This I think is what makes infrared photography so interesting. Since each exposure takes time (sometimes over 4 minutes depending on your aperture) things move in that timeframe, which adds motion blur. This motion blur, I think, makes the image look like you’re looking into a dreamland or dreamscape. The green foliage of the leaves of trees and plants turns white and adds to that otherworldly look. I guess I’m use to long exposure with pinhole photography and I also enjoy using neutral density (ND) filters to slow things down for color images. I know you can do color infrared but I prefer the look of black and white. As you can probably tell from the photos in this gallery, most of them are created when I travel to tropical destinations.
