Unique natural light portrait photography playing with depth of field

Our son has always been cooperative when I asked if I could take a picture. First of all, I don’t like the term “take a picture”. So I often will write “create a photo”. The word “take” is so negative and I just don’t like the sound of it. Making the person feel like they’re part of the creative process is always a good way to approach portrait photography. Why not make the person feel like their opinion matters and you want to hear it. If someone on a shoot asks if they can see the photo on my camera, I always say, “yes, of course”. Often times they look and see things in the photo that they would like to change. Maybe it’s their hair or a piece of jewelry they have is out of place. This interaction creates synergy and that converts into better photographs in the end for everyone.
