Yakusugi Land Trail Carving Yakushima Japanese Cedar Tree

color photo of a large tree stump that has been laid in the path of a trail and carved with an axe or knife to help create traction on the wood when it's wet. Bracken ferns and moss can be see on the sides of the trail in Yakusugi Land in Yakushima Japan

We were about twenty minutes into our hike when I passed over this section of trail. It was leading up a hill a bit and the trail crew had carved in a large tree stump and laid it into the trail to increase traction and reduce slipping on the wood. I’ve never seen this before and thought what a wonderful idea. So I took a quick snap with my phone as a reminder. I see this as an artful way of improving the safety of the trail while being in harmony with the forest.
